Leading the organisation.
Enabling artistic excellence.

Camerata Salzburg is one of the world’s leading chamber orchestras, with an international reputation and deep roots in its home city. It performs regularly at the Salzburg Festival and Mozartwoche, presents its own subscription series with international artists and maintains a close relationship with the Wiener Konzerthaus.

As Managing Director, Michael Sowa led the orchestra’s artistic and commercial development in close collaboration with its musicians and board. His responsibilities brought together an international network of artists, promoters and concert halls with programme planning, recording projects, fundraising and organisational leadership.

His central ambition was to open the Camerata to more people: combining artistic excellence and international concert activity with music education, audience development and contemporary communication. A stronger connection with audiences was also essential to building lasting private and public support.

International stages.
Artistic partnerships.

Michael Sowa planned and realised international concerts and touring projects through a network spanning more than 70 venues in over 20 countries during his tenure. This work involved close relationships with artists, agencies and promoters, alongside the practical and commercial coordination needed to bring a travelling orchestra onto major concert stages.

A highlight was the Camerata’s 2018 visit to Abu Dhabi with Renaud Capuçon. Mozart’s five violin concertos met an enthusiastic, internationally diverse audience at the Emirates Palace Auditorium, before the orchestra continued on an extensive tour of Asia.

For Sowa, the experience showed how Mozart could reach audiences in a place many people might not immediately associate with his music. Strong communication, an outstanding concert hall, music education initiatives and accompanying events—including a pre-concert event at Louvre Abu Dhabi—made the performances part of a wider cultural experience. This approach attracted a broad audience while preserving the quality of the music-making.

“What fascinated me in Abu Dhabi was how Mozart’s music brought people from different cultures together. Music speaks a language we can all understand—and the Camerata carries that language into the world as a musical ambassador.”

He secured Renaud Capuçon, François Leleux and Fazıl Say as official artistic partners for the 2019/20 season, strengthened the relationship with the Wiener Konzerthaus and developed a new partnership with the Tiroler Festspiele Erl. Sowa also built a close working relationship with Alondra de la Parra.

Recording projects formed a further part of this artistic development. Sowa initiated and developed projects with Hélène Grimaud and Felix Klieser, among others. The Klieser recording reached No. 2 in the German classical charts. Around 130,000 people experienced the orchestra live during the 2018/19 season.

Growing audiences.
Opening doors to music.

“Every Salzburg resident should feel that the Camerata is their orchestra.”

Bringing more people into the concert hall meant connecting a demanding artistic programme with accessible ways to encounter the orchestra. During Sowa’s tenure, occupancy at Salzburg subscription concerts rose from 88% to 95%.

He revitalised CAMERATA Young and supported formats such as CAMERATA Talk, Side by Side and Conduct Us. Open rehearsals, artist conversations, season presentations and affordable youth tickets offered different points of entry into the orchestra’s life. At Schubert in Gastein, music education activities and accompanying events helped open the festival to a broader audience and raise its profile, creating opportunities to encounter the Camerata beyond the traditional concert hall.

“Music education often opens the door for parents, too—through the musical experiences of their children.”

Michael Sowa · on music education and families

One lesson from this work was that music education reaches beyond children. Sowa found that parents often discovered their own way into classical music through the experiences offered to their children. These initiatives could therefore open doors for whole families.

Children’s curiosity can turn music into a shared experience: parents listen with them, ask questions and get to know the people behind the orchestra. Approachable formats help families encounter classical music without feeling that they need prior knowledge. For Sowa, this wider effect was an important part of audience development—building relationships that could extend from a first encounter to a visit to the concert hall.

A more contemporary visual identity, stronger press work and closer communication through social media, the newsletter and programme publications supported this opening.

The aim was to make the Camerata visible and approachable in Salzburg while communicating the quality of its international work.

“You can be the best musician in the world. If nobody knows about you, your music cannot reach them.”

Michael Sowa · on visibility and audience development

Artistic quality, participation and communication reinforced one another: building interest, strengthening the orchestra’s place in the community and creating a stronger basis for sponsorship and public funding.

“We carry the legacy of the past forward—and add new ideas, innovation and momentum.”

Michael Sowa · on continuity and innovation

Michael Sowa introduced the web-based orchestra management system 442 Hz and developed additional functions to make administration more efficient. It brought together concert planning, music procurement, musician accounts, concert administration and settlement, with connections to accounting and the orchestra’s website.

This created a shared foundation for the office and musicians, reduced administrative effort and laid the groundwork for a new website with more direct management of concert information. The digital work therefore supported both the organisation behind the concerts and the way audiences encountered the Camerata online.

Early tests with digital scores on iPads complemented this development. The 2019/20 season brochure presented CAMERATA Digital, announcing a first subscription concert using iPads and foot pedals in cooperation with Newzik, alongside the new website then in preparation.

Financial recovery and stronger support

“Artistic passion and sound economic judgement can go hand in hand.”

Michael Sowa · on artistic quality and financial responsibility

Under Sowa’s management, the orchestra completed its debt elimination, building on the recovery begun before his appointment. Higher income and lower expenditure contributed to a positive overall result.

The opening of the Camerata and its music education initiatives also raised its profile among potential sponsors. They showed the orchestra’s value beyond individual concerts: international artistic quality combined with access, participation and a stronger connection to the community.

He secured new private sponsors, including Zürcher Kantonalbank Österreich, and increased public funding. Together with the reorganisation of the office and a more coherent public presentation, this strengthened the financial and organisational conditions for the Camerata’s artistic work.
